A recent sculptural work by artist and Art Teacher at Hawthorne Valley, Martina Muller is on display in the gardens between the store and Main House through late June, when it will move to the “Chatham Meadows Sculpture Show,” the Columbia County Council on the Arts’ annual summer sculpture show. The sculpture show (101 Harmon Heights Road, Chatham, NY) is held on 15 acres of rolling meadows, wooded paths, pond and stream–a variety of micro-environments to complement multiple aspects of varied works. The Grand Opening for the show is scheduled for Saturday, July 23rd in the late afternoon. All are welcome to attend.

Martina was inspired to create the piece last summer at Tanglewood while listening to Yo-Yo Ma and friends playing Brahms piano trios. The sculpture, a kinetic piece, is called Cantabile which is Italian for “singing”. Muller explains, “The sculptural shapes of the piece reflect musical movement, or air that is stirred in a musical way, or like the wind brings air into movement. That’s also why it is a kinetic piece that moves with the wind and changes direction with the melody of the air.” It is made out of mirror polish stainless steel.
